A humbling review of Pukawiss the Outcast from LGBT Bookshelf. "One of the book’s surprising and gratifying elements is the casting of the reservation’s resident Baptist pastor as a villain and conspirator of that harpy mother. These two resent anything smacking of Native paganism, or spirituality outside the cookie-cutter world of the parish. Their machinations are disruptive, inflammatory, spiteful, and Joshua is far from alone in being unable to do any damn’ thing to stop them -- if the novel has a subtle message, it’s nested right here. These are by no means new ideas, but pursuit of this aspect of the story is a courageous move by Hawke, which will be applauded by just as many free spirits as it’s likely to be tut-tutted by others."
