The novel follows the story of a young teen, the very likeable Micah McGhee, a high school dropout who was relentlessly bullied, rejected by his peers, harassed by cops, and is just trying to get by in life at a local fast food dive, while taking care of his alcoholic father. Then things really get bad for him when a drug-gang murders him on his way home from work.
The story should end there, but it doesn't. Micah wakes up a few days later only to discover two rather amazing truths. One is that he is still alive, and the other is that he is now God—or rather the next best thing.
The novel is every teens' fantasy come true. Tension arises however, as a group of fundamentalist Christians discover the source of Micah's omnipotent powers and desperately attempt to co-opt it in order to judge humankind for its many sins. Micah is determined to prevent that from happening. And in the end, his Christian friends learn a valuable lesson. For at the core of this novel is a powerful message - careful what you wish for, as you just might get it.
